BMW 5 Series (w/ Video)
BMW revealed the all-new 5 Series in Munich yesterday. The sixth-generation of the executive sedan features an athletic design with balanced proportions and evolutionary design elements.
The aesthetic of the car is achieved through a design emblematic of BMW. At the front are a long hood and the automaker's characteristic kidney grille, inclined forward. The slightly wedge-like shape of the body imbues a dynamic, sporting character, with concave surfaces and short overhangs. The elegant profile features a modern interpretation of BMW's defining Hofmeister kink and a 'coupe-like' roofline.
Inside, the cabin features many of the sporting but luxurious features found in the larger 7 Series and recently-launched 5 Series GT, such as Black Panel technology. The asymmetrically-designed center console is inclined seven degrees towards the driver for improved ergonomics, while the car's 2968mm wheelbase - the longest in its class - creates a greater feeling of interior space for rear passengers.

GM's Cadillac division took the wraps off the CTS coupe today, November 23. The sleek two-door, which is virtually identical to the concept revealed at the 2008 NAIAS in Detroit, joins the CTS sedan and performance-oriented CTS-V as well as the CTS Sportwagon in the automakers' lineup.
"Cadillac has always been an emotional brand - it's about delivering art regardless of body style," said Max Wolff, director of exterior design for Cadillac. "With the CTS Coupe, it was about taking something very strong - the CTS sport sedan - and extending its potential.
"
"CTS Coupe is the new focal point of Cadillac, expressing both our design and technical capabilities," said Bryan Nesbitt, former vice president of design for GM North America turned Cadillac general manager. "It is intended to appeal to a new generation of car enthusiasts."

The Honda Element lineup expands for the 2010 model year with an all-new "Dog Friendly™" pet accommodation system designed to improve safety, comfort and convenience for dogs and their owners alike, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. The 2010 Honda Element arrives at dealerships nationwide by mid-October. The Dog Friendly Element is set to become available on November 16.
"The Honda Element has long been recognized as an accommodating vehicle for people with active lifestyles involving sports and hobbies," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of Product Planning for American Honda. "The new Dog Friendly Element takes that concept to a whole new level with specially designed features for dogs and their owners."
Engineered to integrate with factory precision into the Element EX, the Dog Friendly equipment is intended to accommodate the secure transportation of a dog in the cargo area within a nylon-webbed car kennel. In daily operation the car kennel helps prevent a dog from interfering with the driver in traffic by keeping the pet properly restrained and out of reach of the driver. In the event of a frontal collision, the kennel is intended to help restrain the dog behind the rear seats, reducing the chance for the pet to be injured - or to injure human occupants during a crash.
The Dog Friendly equipment enhances pet comfort by providing a soft floor surface for the dog's legs and paws along with a dedicated fan and a spill resistant water source. Convenience is improved for owners with an integrated ramp, easy to clean surfaces and a full suite of matching Dog Friendly accoutrements.
Major components include:
- a soft-sided cargo area car kennel made from seat belt-grade netting;
- a cushioned pet bed in the cargo area with an elevated platform;
- a 12V DC rear ventilation fan;
- second-row seat covers with a dog pattern design (matches the bed fabric);
- an extendable ramp (stores under the pet bed platform);
- all-season rubber floor mats with a toy bone pattern;
- a spill-resistant water bowl; and
- Dog Friendly exterior emblems (driver's side and rear).
The ramp stores underneath the bed platform and can be conveniently accessed when the rear tailgate is down. The car kennel was designed and is being constructed by Takata Corporation, one of the world's leading automotive safety systems suppliers. The Dog Friendly equipment group has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $995.
Already designed to be people friendly, the Honda Element received numerous upgrades for the 2009 model year that included a new exterior appearance and a refreshed interior design. Three unique Element models are available that range from the rugged and simple Element LX, to the more refined Element EX, to the sporty Element SC. The Dog Friendly equipment group is designed exclusively for the Element EX trim level.
The Element offers an easy-to-clean urethane floor (carpeted on SC) and an expansive, flat cargo area (up to 74.6 cu-ft. with rear seats removed), wide-opening side cargo doors, low lift-in height, and accommodating dimensions for tall items. The interior provides seating for four people along with a cargo area that quickly adapts to large items with its flip-up rear seats that fold flat, fold up and to the side, or can be removed altogether (64-plus seating arrangements).
The Element LX and EX have a water resistant urethane-coated utility floor that quickly wipes down and seat fabric that resists moisture. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and keyless entry.
All Element models feature a 2.4-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Real Time 4WD™, available on the Element LX and EX, enhances all-weather traction. EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings range from 20/25 mile per gallon for two-wheel-drive models and 19/24 miles per gallon for Real Time 4WD models.
The Element LX comes standard with a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system with a CD player. The Element EX and SC feature a 270-watt high-output audio system, an AM/FM tuner, CD player with MP3/WMA™ capability, auxiliary audio input for MP3 players or other audio devices, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, seven speakers including a 6.5-inch subwoofer. XM® Radio is standard on the Element EX and SC.
The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is an available feature on the Element EX and includes a rear backup camera and a USB audio interface. The navigation system features a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to an internal single-disc CD player and a digital audio card reader.
Numerous storage bins and beverage holders provide places for cell phones, CDs and drinks. Available storage areas include: a large three-bin tray above the glove box (ideal for mobile phones and portable music players); a modular 3-compartment overhead storage bin (EX, SC); seat back storage (EX, SC); six hooks for strapping down bikes or other bulky gear; and door storage pockets on all four doors. The Element EX exclusively has a convertible center console with a removable cooler/storage box.
The Element SC provides a unique appearance with street custom-inspired styling, a lowered stance and exclusive premium features. Its exterior styling exhibits a performance-oriented attitude with a monochromatic color scheme and exclusive features that include custom front and rear painted bumpers, large alloy wheels, custom grille, and a lowered stance. The lowered stance is achieved by lowering the ride height and by using uniquely shaped painted side sills and slimmer roof moldings.
Element SC interior appointments include passenger-area carpeting, a fixed center console with storage, piano black trim pieces and unique fabrics and patterns. The exclusive center console integrates the auxiliary audio input jack and two beverage holders. Meter styling color on all Element SC models is copper-hue, replacing the blue backlit illumination on the other models.
The Element's fully independent suspension uses a front MacPherson strut design and a rear compact double wishbone design for responsive handling and a comfortable ride. A 101.4-inch wheelbase contributes to a compact exterior size. An ultra-tight turning diameter of 34.9-feet (36.9-feet, Element SC) provides for excellent maneuverability in tight quarters. Element LX and EX models are equipped with 16-inch wheels (steel on LX, alloy on EX) with all-season P215/70R16 tires. Additional LX and EX standard features include power rack-and-pinion steering and front and rear stabilizer bars (30.0x4.5 mm tubular front / 21.0 mm solid rear).
The Element SC adds 18-inch alloy wheels, P225/55R18 tires, exclusive spring and damper tuning (30 percent firmer), a lowered ride height (approximately 0.7 inches) and increased rear stabilizer bar size (25.0 mm, solid). Compared to Element LX and EX, the solid front stabilizer bar is 25 percent stiffer and the rear stabilizer bar is 30 percent stiffer. The steering gear box also provides a 6 percent faster ratio (2.94:1 compared to 3.26:1).
All Element models have an aluminum Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine that produces 166-horsepower at 5800 rpm and 161 lb-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. The Element's i-VTEC variable valve timing system enhances low rpm torque while also delivering high rpm horsepower. The five-speed automatic transmission features Grade Logic Control to minimize "gear hunting" on hilly roads.
Available on Element LX and EX, the Real Time 4WD system aids traction in snow, rain and sand by sending power to the rear wheels when the front drive wheels experience a traction loss.
Standard safety equipment includes: Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as electronic stability control; a pedestrian safety design in the front of the vehicle; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags; side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); active front seat head restraints; an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and active front seat head restraints.
The Element is assembled in Ohio at the Honda of America Mfg., Inc., East Liberty Auto Plant using domestic and globally sourced parts.
Covering the largest floor area of any single brand at the show, Honda booth combines automobiles, motorcycles, power products and other highlights to present the distinctive world of Honda mobility. Driven by dreams and passion, and with the booth concept of "Creating the never before!" Honda strived to propose attractive products that please and amaze its customers.
Honda's automobile exhibit will present a variety of environmentally responsible approaches to mobility, including hybrid vehicles, a fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery electric vehicle. The display will also highlight models with innovative packaging and enhanced driving performance that communicate the enjoyment an automobile can provide.
With the motorcycle display, Honda proposes products which are filled with creativity and dreams and create new value to further broaden the potential of motorcycles. The motorcycles on display range from large-displacement sports bikes that offer new riding pleasure to compact commuter models powered by electricity.
Also on display are butane gas canister-powered power products, as well as a new personal mobility device which was developed based on the concept of "harmony with people."
The special display zone named "HELLO!" (Honda Electric mobility Loop) will feature a comprehensive display of electricity-based products, including products that supply electricity, vehicles that run on electricity and products with innovative electronic technologies.
The 2010 Honda Civic lineup has its bases covered with technologically advanced Civic Sedan and Coupe models, a Civic Hybrid, a high-performance Civic Si and a dedicated natural gas-powered Civic GX. All Civics were recently enhanced inside and out for the 2009 model year with new exterior styling, colors and increased availability of tech-friendly features. For 2010, the entire range of Civics remains largely unchanged.
Enhancements carried over from 2009 include recently refreshed exterior and interior styling features comprised of updated headlight and taillight combinations; new alloy wheel designs for Civic EX, Civic EX-L and Civic Si; and updated seating cloth materials for a more premium interior feel.
“The Honda Civic meets the needs of a diverse audience with economical and fun-to-drive performance in a wide variety of choices and styles,” said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of product planning for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Civic’s reputation for durability, quality and reliability helps it stand apart from the crowd.”
Built on a high-rigidity unit-body platform, the Civic is designed to deliver precise, sharp and refined handling performance with its MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.
Four engine and four transmission choices range from a 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine (Civic DX, DX-VP, LX, EX and EX-L), with either a 5-speed manual or an available 5-speed automatic transmission, to a 197-horsepower, 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine (Civic Si) with a 6-speed manual transmission. The Civic Hybrid is powered by a 1.3-liter i-VTEC engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) gasoline-electric hybrid technology to enhance both fuel economy and performance, and is equipped with a continuously variable transmission.
The Civic GX is powered by a dedicated natural gas version of the Civic’s 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine – and is equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Both Civic Hybrid and Civic GX are classified as Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (AT-PZEV) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The Civic GX is classified by the EPA as an Inherently Low Emissions Vehicle (ILEV).
The entire line-up maintains a standard array of safety technologies including Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure; side curtain airbags; driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); and dual-stage, dual-threshold driver’s and front passenger’s airbags (SRS). Active front seat head restraints are designed to help reduce the likelihood of neck injury in the event of a rear collision.
Standard active safety features include an anti-lock brake system (ABS) and electronic brake distribution, front seatbelts with an automatic tensioning system, and a pedestrian injury mitigation design incorporated into the front exterior of the vehicle. Driver and front passenger seatbelt reminders and daytime running lights are also standard equipment. The Civic EX-L, Civic Si and Civic Hybrid include Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as electronic stability control, as standard safety content.
The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System, available on Civic EX, EX-L, Si and Hybrid models, has a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to the internal single-disc CD player, and a digital audio-card reader that can play MP3 and Windows Media® Audio (WMA) files from CompactFlash® cards (via a PC card adapter).
The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest and the voice activation can control the navigation menus and the audio system, along with entering city and street names. The system includes Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, a wireless telephone interface that works with compatible Bluetooth-enabled mobile telephones for hands-free operation via steering wheel-mounted controls.
Auxiliary audio input jacks are standard equipment on Civic DX-VP and above trim levels, allowing for portable music device playback through the audio system. The Civic LX Coupe has a six-speaker 160-watt audio system with a CD player (four speakers for the DX-VP and LX sedan). All audio systems are capable of playing MP3- and WMA-formatted CDs. Standard Speed-sensitive Volume Control (SVC) automatically adjusts the volume based on vehicle speed. Audio displays include CD/MP3 text readout, and all coupes (except for the DX) plus the Civic Si Sedan provide a customizable welcome screen (exclusively on models without the available navigation system).
Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe with 1.8-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine
The Civic lineup for both the Sedan and Coupe start with the value-rich Civic DX model equipped with a standard 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter, SOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual transmission (5-speed automatic available), power windows, 15-inch steel wheels with covers and P195/65R15 tires, and a folding rear seat. The Civic DX-VP Sedan adds air conditioning, a four-speaker 160-watt AM/FM Audio System with CD player (MP3/WMA enabled), and an auxiliary audio input jack.
The Civic LX adds or upgrades: cruise control, power door locks, 16-inch steel wheels with covers, P205/55R16 tires, keyless entry, center console with sliding armrest, progressive blue illumination instrument panel meters, auto up and down driver’s power window, and a folding rear seat.
The Civic LX-S Sedan adds or upgrades: alloy wheels, LX-S-exclusive sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and silver stitching, LX-S-exclusive leather-wrapped steering wheel, LX-S-exclusive rear-deck spoiler, and a chrome exhaust finisher.
The Civic EX Sedan and Coupe adds or upgrades: a one-touch power moonroof, a 60/40 split folding rear seat, ambient console lighting, steering wheel-mounted audio controls and the availability of the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Activation, which also includes XM Satellite Radio.
The Civic EX-L adds or upgrades: leather-trimmed seating surfaces, console, steering wheel and shift knob; heated seats; and heated door mirrors.The Civic EX Coupe and EX-L Coupe exclusively feature a 7-speaker with subwoofer AM/FM audio system with CD player (MP3/WMA enabled).
The Civic Si Sedan and Coupe serve as the performance cornerstone for the Civic lineup with a 197-horsepower, 16-valve, DOHC, 2.0 liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine mated to a close-ratio, 6-speed manual transmission. A helical-type, limited-slip differential enhances traction in high-performance driving situations. The Civic Si’s sport-tuned suspension adds firm spring, damper and stabilizer bar tuning along with exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels and high-performance tires. Exclusive exterior features include a rear wing spoiler (low profile on the sedan) and Si emblems. The sports-oriented interior adds firmly-bolstered and performance oriented sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and red stitching. For 2010, the only cosmetic change to the Civic Si is the color of the engine cover switching from silver to black.
The Civic Hybrid with advanced Integrated Motor Assist IMA® hybrid technology achieves an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy of 40/45 miles per gallon and includes Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and an available leather-trimmed interior with heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and heated side mirrors. The Civic Hybrid is certified by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) as an Advanced-Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV). A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard equipment.
The Civic Hybrid can deactivate all four of its cylinders and operate using only the electric motor in certain low-speed cruising situations. Power for the Civic Hybrid is provided by a 1.3-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine and a 15 kilowatt electric motor, producing a combined 110-horsepower @ 6000 rpm and combined 123 lb-ft. of torque @ 1000-2500 rpm.
The ultra-clean Civic GX produces near zero emissions and enables owners to become eligible for a $4,000 federal tax credit. The 2010 Civic GX is the only dedicated natural gas-powered passenger car available to retail customers in the United States and achieves an EPA estimated city/highway fuel economy of 24/36 miles per gasoline-gallon5. Currently, natural gas is approximately 35 percent less expensive than gasoline when purchased at a refueling station. The Civic GX is the only vehicle certified by the EPA to meet both Federal Tier 2-Bin 2 and Inherently Low Emission Vehicle (ILEV) zero evaporative emission certification standards. The Civic GX is available to consumers at qualified Honda dealers in the states of California, Utah and New York and is also available to fleet customers nationwide from qualified Honda dealers.
The Honda CR-V adds to its compact crossover SUV credentials for the 2010 model year with refinements and upgrades to the exterior and interior, new features, better fuel economy, and more power.
Exterior styling enhancements include a freshened front fascia with a new grille and bumper design, a re-sculpted hood, and a new rear bumper shape. A 10-spoke alloy wheel design, standard on CR-V EX and EX-L, replaces the previous 7-spoke alloy wheel design. Interior improvements focus on new features and functionality. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is now included on models equipped with the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™. Auto on/off headlights have been added to the CR-V EX-L and the front seats have wider center armrests on all models.
Upgrades to the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine improve power output to 180 horsepower (hp), a 14 hp increase. City/highway EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings increase to 21/28 miles per gallon (mpg) on 2WD models and 21/27 mpg1 on models equipped with Real Time™ 4WD - an increase of 1 mpg in both city and highway driving on all models.
"The CR-V provides many of the favorable aspects of a car and an SUV in a stylish, yet highly functional and capable vehicle," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "For 2010, the CR-V represents an even better value with significant upgrades throughout the vehicle."
While compact on the outside with a 103.1-inch wheelbase and a convenient-to-park length of less than 15 feet, the interior provides 103.8 cu-ft. of passenger volume (CR-V LX) for up to five passengers. Add in a cargo volume of 35.7 cu-ft. behind the rear seats and the CR-V creates a total interior volume that, from a space efficiency perspective, exceeds the U.S. EPA's size definition for a large sedan of 120 cu-ft.
A wide range of interior updates for 2010 include modifications to the radio functionality and control layout, the introduction of new seat fabric textures and an upgraded interior door handle design with a rubberized grip handle. Revised trim panel sections for the steering wheel, gear selector, upper glove box and center console (navigation-equipped models only) serve to brighten the overall interior color theme. Models equipped with an ivory interior now feature a more passenger-friendly darker brown carpet instead of light brown.
The AM/FM/CD audio system integrates a dual tone gray/black color scheme with blue backlighting, replacing black. The CR-V EX-L (navigation and non-navigation models) receives a USB Audio Interface for direct access to music files on compatible devices using the vehicle's existing controls.
Consistent with the new audio system backlighting, the background color of the Multi-Information Display (MID) now appears blue (previously black). The MID's digital display functions, which include the odometer, trip computer and vehicle maintenance indicators among other features, for 2010 now include a compass feature on CR-V EX and EX-L (non-navigation) models. On navigation-equipped models, the newly added Bluetooth HandsFreeLink status and related functions are displayed in the MID.
For comfort, the driver's and front passenger's center folding armrests are each wider by 1 inch compared to the previous model. The front row storage zones continue to offer the same functionality with areas designed to accommodate items as large as a handbag between the seats to items as small as a mobile phones and music players on the retractable center tray table. A center console replaces the retractable center tray table on the CR-V EX-L with navigation.
A sliding 60/40 split second row seat with a 40/20/40 folding seatback offers cargo versatility by sliding forward to increase cargo space, folding forward to accommodate long objects, or folding and tumbling forward to create a large, flat cargo area. Maximum possible cargo volume measures 72.9 cu-ft. with approximate floor dimensions of 51 inches long by 39 inches wide (at wheel wells). Storage potential behind the rear seat is enhanced by a dual-deck cargo shelf (CR-V EX and EX-L) that can strategically accommodate items like a folded baby stroller on the lower level and groceries bags on the upper level. The second row seat includes a Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) child seat mounting system for all rear seat positions, allowing two outboard child seats to be installed or one center child seat.
Standard safety equipment includes: the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure; Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), commonly referred to as electronic stability control; and a pedestrian safety design in the front of the vehicle. Additional standard equipment includes side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; front side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); active front seat head restraints; an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist; and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).
The CR-V's unit-body construction makes extensive use of high-strength steel (58 percent) to save weight and create a high-rigidity body structure, which significantly contributes to the vehicle's ride quality, fuel efficiency and safety performance.
A dynamic forward cabin blends the CR-V's upscale body lines into a sculpted lower body with a rugged appearance and durable cladding. A two-tier grille and a side profile with an arched window shape and chrome trim accent the CR-V's distinctive and upscale presence.
For 2010, the front fascia's upper grille has a single horizontal chrome-style trim cross bar as opposed to the double slat style cross bar from the previous design. The hood's sheet metal now flows flush into the upper portion of the grille instead of wrapping down and around the grille.
The lower portion of the grille receives a honeycomb design that replaces the previous three-bar horizontal cross design. A chrome-colored trim piece has been added at the junction where the lower grille section intersects the top of the bumper (on EX and EX-L only). The circular port for Honda Genuine Accessory fog lights is encompassed within the re-sculpted front bumper's painted surface area, which extends lower on the vehicle, instead of within the lower black body cladding. Correspondingly, the re-shaped rear bumper's painted surface area now encompasses the red rear reflectors, also previously located within the black cladding.
The suspension is comprised of a front MacPherson strut layout and a rear multi-link suspension. The high-rigidity body and independent suspension offer a comfortable and engaging driving experience for a crossover SUV. State-of-the art noise absorption materials help to reduce engine and road noise for a quieter cabin.
The all-aluminum,16-valve, Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) i-VTEC engine inegrates an "intelligent" version of Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control along with Variable Timing Control (VTC), which are sophisticated Honda valvetrain technologies designed to enhance fuel economy and power output while reducing exhaust emissions. The VTEC portion of the system hydraulically adjusts the intake valves' rocker arms for lift and duration to help optimize engine efficiency for low- and high-RPM ranges. The Variable Timing Control (VTC) aspect of i-VTEC allows for continuously variable phasing of the intake camshaft, which helps improve engine torque, promote a smooth engine idle, and create an internal exhaust gas recirculation effect for reduced smog-forming emissions (NOx).
For 2010, power and efficiency improvements result from the engine's compression ratio increasing to 10:5:1 from 9.7:1, fuel injectors with a finer spray pattern, larger intake valves, spark plugs with extended electrodes, friction-reducing piston rings, higher-precision timing sensor and a higher flow-rate exhaust system.

The 2010 Honda Insight EX earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) 2009 TOP SAFETY PICK Award, the organization's highest honor. The annual award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side, and rear crashes based on ratings in IIHS tests.
"Fuel economy and safety have always been part of Honda's DNA," said Erik Berkman, vice president of corporate planning and logistics. "The Insight EX is a great example of an affordable vehicle that receives a high rating for safety."
Honda operates two of the world's most sophisticated crash test laboratories with the objective of developing the highest level of safety design and technology. The Tochigi, Japan, facility was the world's first indoor omni-directional car-to-car crash testing facility and the Honda R&D America's Raymond, Ohio, development center performs testing on all U.S.-developed models.
American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted May total vehicle sales of 98,344, a decline of 39.2 percent compared to all-time record-setting May 2008 results. Year-to-date sales of 430,358 represent a 33.3 percent decrease on a daily-selling-rate basis compared to last year.
Honda Division posted May sales of 88,875, a decline of 39.7 percent versus May 2008. The all-new Insight hybrid posted sales of 2,780, helping drive an increase in total Honda hybrid sales of 7.5 percent.
"May of 2008 was the best month ever for American Honda, as consumers sought fuel-efficient cars in record numbers," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "Staying true to the course of providing fuel- efficient, high-quality, fun-to-drive vehicles will hopefully help see us through to the economic recovery."
Honda total car sales decreased by 48.9 percent to 51,947. Honda light truck sales saw a decrease of 19.4 percent to 36,928.
The Acura Division posted sales of 9,469, a decrease of 34.0 percent compared to May 2008. The TL sedan was the division's top seller, with 3,375 units sold.

The 250-horsepower V-6 engine provides both performance and enhanced efficiency with Variable Cylinder Management™, a technology that can deactivate up to three of the engine’s six cylinders to save fuel when cruising or lightly accelerating. The available Variable Torque Management™ 4-Wheel-Drive (VTM-4®) enhances traction in rain, snow and slippery terrain. All models are equipped with a standard towing receiver and a maximum tow rating of 4,500 pounds on 4WD models and 3,500 pounds on 2WD models.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced that actress and environmental youth leader, Q’orianka Kilcher, took delivery of the FCX Clarity hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle on May 7 at Honda of Santa Monica. Kilcher completed a two-year lease term as one of the original FCX customers.
"Since my first car was the Honda FCX, I am proud to say that I have never pumped a gallon of gasoline,” said Kilcher. “As a young person, I feel it is my responsibility to always try my best to think about the consequences of my actions and choices as a consumer, and the impact they have on our planet."
Kilcher, winner of numerous environmental youth awards, is the world’s youngest FCX Clarity owner at 19 years old. The zero-emissions vehicle can be refueled at a Shell hydrogen station in West Los Angeles, which is the first retail hydrogen station to produce hydrogen from water via a roof-mounted electrolysis unit.
The FCX Clarity is a next-generation, hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle. Propelled by an electric motor that runs on electricity generated in the fuel cell, the vehicle's only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is more than two times that of a modern gasoline-powered automobile.

New dog-friendly transportation concepts designed for the Honda Element add canine-specific enhancements to one of the most dog-friendly vehicles available, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today at the New York International Auto Show.
Developed specifically for the Element, the Dog Friendly™ components demonstrate the potential for a dedicated pet restraint system designed to meet the needs of dog owners. A finalized version of the Dog Friendly Element is scheduled to debut this fall. Major components will likely include:
- a cushioned pet bed in the cargo area with an elevated platform;
- second row and cargo area pet restraint systems;
- an extendable cargo area load-in ramp;
- a 12V DC rear ventilation fan;
- second-row seat covers with a dog pattern design (matches the bed fabric);
- all-season rubber floor mats with a toy bone pattern;
- a spill-resistant water bowl; and
- Dog Friendly exterior emblems.
"In an interesting turn of events, cars are now chasing dogs," said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. "Factory integration of a cushioned pet bed, restraint systems and other components is intended to transform the Element into the ultimate dog car."
The Dog Friendly equipment, engineered specifically for the Element, is designed to accommodate the transportation of dogs in the second-row passenger seats or in the cargo area. The restraint system concepts were designed and fabricated by Takata Corporation, one of the world's leading automotive safety systems suppliers, exclusively for display on the Dog Friendly Honda Element concept vehicle. The restraint concepts are intended to complement the potential of the vehicle's existing restraint systems by helping to protect the dog and helping to prevent injuries to other vehicle occupants due to an unrestrained dog impacting them in a collision. For convenience, a ramp is included to help dogs access the rear cargo area. The ramp stores underneath the bed platform and can be conveniently accessed when the rear tailgate is down.

American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted March vehicle sales of 88,379, a decline of 33.7 percent compared to March 2008, based on the daily selling rate, the company reported today. Honda Division posted March sales of 79,374, a decline of 34.2 percent compared to March 2008.
"The sales decline appears particularly steep when compared to last year's strong first quarter," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "The launch of the all-new Honda Insight hybrid is helping to better position the company for a tough economy where affordability and efficiency count more than ever. The demand for innovation still exists."
The 2010 Insight debuted in limited quantities on March 24 and achieved sales of 569 in its first partial month of sales. Honda Division total car sales decreased by 32.6 percent, to 49,346. Honda Division light-truck sales decreased 36.7 percent, to 30,028.
The Acura Division posted sales of 9,005, a decline of 29.5 percent compared to March 2008. Sales of the TSX sports sedan, the brand's second-best-selling model for the month, increased 16.6 percent, to 2,556.
More than 320 college students from 64 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are making final preparations to face off in a unique battle of academic prowess at the 20th annual Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC), March 27-29, in Orlando, FL. The "Strong 64" participating schools, representing states from across the nation, were announced this week on HCASC's website (http://www.hcasc.com/nct09/strong64.asp). Each participating college and university will have the opportunity to win grants for their school. In all, more than $300,000 in institutional grants will be awarded this year.
Since 1989, HCASC has brought together the nation's best and brightest academic competitors from the America's top HBCUs. During the three-day tournament, teams of college students showcase their intellectual skills in the areas of world history, science, literature, religion, the arts, social sciences, popular culture and African-American history and culture. Throughout its 20 year history, HCASC has been the only annual academic competition between the nation's HBCUs, touching over 50,000 students and awarding more than $5 million in grants.
In addition to providing students a venue for friendly competition, HCASC encourages relationship building, intellectual excellence and the development values that define good character. Many HCASC alumni have made significant contributions in the fields of science, medicine, aeronautics, education and government.

Colleges and universities from Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Mississippi, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania and New York are slated to participate in this year's 20th anniversary landmark challenge. In addition to receiving an all-expense paid trip to Orlando, FL. to compete, each participating institution will receive grant money for their college or university.

The all-new 2010 Honda Insight goes on-sale March 24 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price1 (MSRP) of $19,800 for the Insight LX, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.
The distinctively styled, five-passenger, five-door dedicated hybrid vehicle is powered by an Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) system comprised of a 1.3-liter i-VTEC® gasoline engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor that together contribute to an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy rating of 40/43 miles per gallonn2. The Insight features the Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™), an innovation that can further enhance efficient vehicle operation while providing feedback related to individual driving styles.

"In addition to making good environmental sense, hybrid technology is now entering a new era where it can also make financial sense for a broader range of customers."
A sleek exterior blends design elements from the original 2000 Insight's highly aerodynamic side profile with a front-end design similar to the hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity, a marquee environmental product for Honda. The interior offers a roomy passenger environment with a configurable rear seating and cargo area that benefits from 60/40 split fold-down seats.
Major features standard to the Insight LX include front, front-side and side-curtain airbags; an anti-lock braking system; a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); Eco Assist; automatic climate control; tilt and telescope steering column; manual driver's seat height adjustment; power windows; a four-speaker AM/FM audio system with CD player and auxiliary audio input for external digital music players; and much more.
A more premium version of the Insight is also available. The Insight EX, with a MSRP of $21,300, adds to the Insight LX features with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®); alloy wheels; cruise control; steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters; an upgraded audio system with six speakers; USB audio interface3; a center console with armrest and storage compartment; heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals; and much more. Exclusively available on the Insight EX, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System4 (6.5-inch screen) with voice recognition provides routing and guidance to individual addresses and more than 7 million points of interest within the continental United States. Models equipped with the navigation system also include Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® for hands-free operation of compatible mobile telephones, along with related steering wheel-mounted controls for voice activation of navigation and hands-free telephone systems.
A 4-cylinder engine with intelligent variable valve timing and a DC brushless electric motor forms the foundation of the IMA hybrid system. The electric motor, positioned in-line between the engine and the transmission, adds power during acceleration and in certain cruising situations, and recaptures energy from the vehicle's forward momentum during braking (regenerative braking).
The Insight's IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on electric power in certain low- to mid-speed cruising conditions. It can also provide cylinder deactivation during deceleration and an idle-stop feature when the vehicle is stationary. With a 10.6-gallon fuel tank, the Insight delivers an estimated maximum driving range exceeding 400 miles. Models for sale in California and states that have adopted the California Air Resources Board (CARB) ZEV standards receive an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) emissions rating.
The Insight introduces Eco Assist to help drivers achieve improved real-world fuel economy. Eco Assist is a feature designed to help drivers optimize fuel efficiency for their given set of driving conditions. Pressing the ECON button can further enhance the efficiency of multiple vehicle systems: throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation (EX only). Eco Assist also provides feedback about driving style via a 3D-appearing background within the speedometer. The background changes colors from green to blue to reflect how efficiently or inefficiently the driver is accelerating or braking (green = efficient). The driver's results are continuously tracked as fuel-economy ratings are shown per drive cycle and on a lifetime basis in the form of plant-leaf graphics that appear in the Multi-Information Display (MID). Up to five leaves can be ‘earned' as the driver demonstrates a fuel-efficient driving style. A real-time score is shown in the Eco Guide MID screen.
Standard safety features on all Insights include dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags; front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbag system; anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD); driver's and front-passenger's active head restraints and a front body designed to mitigate pedestrian injuries. All new Insights also feature Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which provides improved frontal-crash compatibility between vehicles of different size and ride height.

As part of its on-going effort to reduce its global CO2 footprint and fuel consumption, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., (www.honda.com) today became the first company in its industry to introduce a Class 8 hybrid diesel electric truck into its truck fleet at its parts center in Alpharetta, Ga. Built for Honda by Peterbilt Motors Company, the Smartway(SM)-certified* Model 386 hybrid truck is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 45 tons per year, as compared to its diesel counterpart.
Honda uses Class 8 trucks to transport service parts between its parts centers and dealerships. The company's diesel truck fleet, operated by its truck fleet partner, UPS Freight Truckload, typically travels 300,000 miles per day.
The hybrid truck will be utilized along two routes-a hilly route in Tennessee and a relatively flat one in Georgia-in order to evaluate the truck's fuel economy under various driving conditions. Honda will alternate the hybrid with a standard diesel truck and will collect data using engine telematics to accurately compare the performance of the two trucks on the same routes. Testing and evaluation will take place over the next year.
"We're excited to add this environmentally advanced truck to our fleet," said Jim Roach, senior vice president of Parts and Service for American Honda. "With our truck fleet driving hundreds of thousands of miles per day, we feel this is a great opportunity for Honda to further reduce its carbon footprint."
The hybrid truck operates much like a hybrid passenger vehicle, utilizing a parallel diesel-electric hybrid system developed by Eaton Corporation. Similar to Honda's hybrid vehicles, Peterbilt's truck captures energy during braking and stores it in its system's batteries. The system also improves fuel efficiency and lowers emissions by powering the heating, air conditioning and vehicle electrical systems utilizing a no idle auxiliary power unit while the engine is off.
In addition, Honda will soon be adding a Peterbilt Class 7 medium duty hybrid truck at its parts centers in Irving, Texas, and Alpharetta, Ga.
American Honda Motor Co., Inc., posted total February vehicle sales of 71,575, a decline of 35.4 percent compared to February 2008, based on the daily selling rate*. Honda Division posted February sales of 63,916, a decline of 34.9 percent versus February 2008.
"The pattern that emerged a few months ago seems to be continuing," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of sales for American Honda. "We hope, as spring beckons and the economy strengthens, sales will begin their upswing."
Honda total car sales decreased by 33.1 percent, to 35,991. Fit sales increased 2.3 percent, to 4,247. Honda light-truck sales decreased 37.2 percent, to 27,925.
The Acura Division posted sales of 7,659, a decline of 39.0 percent compared to February 2008. Sales of the TSX sports sedan, the brand's second-best-selling model for the month, increased 4.1 percent to 2,293.
