• 200 Mazda MX-5s from all over Europe to gather at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans
• Special Mazda Camp reserved for attendees near the circuit
• An award for the most beautiful MX-5 attending the event
This year, the world’s most legendary endurance race will be venue for the 20th anniversary celebration of the world’s most loved roadster: the Mazda MX-5. First shown at the Chicago Motor Show in February 1989, the original Mazda MX-5 (called Miata at the time) triggered a rebirth of the two-seat roadster. Then as now, the car embodies Jinba Ittai (a Japanese expression meaning “rider and horse as one”) and delivers the very essence of sports car fun. This has been perpetuated by subsequent Mazda designers of three generations of MX-5 since then, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records with more than 850,000 units sold to date.
A total of 200 MX-5s from all over Europe will meet at the 24 Hours of Le Mans to commemorate 20 years of Mazda’s cult roadster, and the special relationship it has with thousands of fans worldwide. The event has been organised in cooperation with MX-5 clubs around Europe and will take place on 13 and 14 June this year.

For 2009, Euro NCAP has implemented a new assessment system that awards a single overall vehicle safety rating composed from scores achieved in four areas of assessment: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Protection, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist. The Mazda6 is Mazda’s first model tested under the revised evaluation framework, which makes the five-star result all the more impressive.
Seita Kanai, Mazda’s Senior Managing Executive Officer in charge of R&D, said “Mazda6’s maximum safety rating from Euro NCAP is a reflection of the progress Mazda has made in harmonizing driving pleasure with safety and environmental performance under the ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom’ plan. Going forward, Mazda will strive to fulfil our corporate social responsibilities by further advancing our eco-friendly and safety technologies.”
Other Mazda models that have received five star ratings in Euro NCAP tests include the Mazda5 in September 2005 and the Mazda2 in December 2007. Both received the highest score for Adult Occupant Protection.

Mazda Motor Corporation will debut two new models of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan) product range at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show from March 3 through 15, 2009. The world premiere of the Mazda3 with i-stop, Mazda’s advanced fuel-saving start-stop system, will be shared with the all-new Mazda3 MPS, Mazda3’s high performance flagship model. The Mazda3 MPS (Mazdaspeed Axela) now features improved fuel economy and emissions that satisfy Euro Stage 5.
Image via WikipediaMazda Motor Europe has promoted Philip Waring, currently Vice President for Sales, to the position of Chief Operating Officer (COO) with responsibility for sales and marketing, effective 1 January 2009. Mr. Waring has headed up Mazda’s European sales organisation, overseeing a period of unprecedented growth, since coming to Leverkusen in July 2005 from Mazda Motors UK Ltd., where he was Managing Director.
This move comes with the departure of Masahiro Moro, currently Vice President of Marketing in Europe, who has been promoted to the position of Executive Officer, Assistant to the Officer in charge of Global Sales and Global Marketing at Mazda’s head office in Japan.
“These promotions are well deserved, as both men have been key contributors to our business during the last few years,” said James Muir, President and CEO of Mazda Motor Europe. “We thank Moro-san for his great work, and wish him continued success in the Mazda organisation. In assuming his responsibilities as new European COO, Phil Waring will move our sales and marketing organisations even closer together, and will continue to build on the successful marketing strategy begun under Moro-san’s stewardship.”
Image via WikipediaMazda Motor Europe announced today it has appointed Wojciech Halarewicz to the position of Managing Director of its new national sales company in Poland – Mazda Motor Logistics Europe Sp. z. o o. Oddział w Polsce – which was established in June this year.
Mr. Halarewicz is currently General Manager and responsible for Sales Operations in Poland and will assume his new position effective 1 January 2009. He joined Mazda last year after holding several executive positions at Fiat in Poland and in Italy. He has a Masters Degree from the University of Economics in Wroclawis, and is fluent in English and Italian.
He takes over for current Managing Director, Syunsuke Hamamoto, who with Mr. Halarewicz successfully developed and implemented Mazda’s business plan for Poland during the last 18 months. Hamamoto-san will assume a new role as Director of Product Marketing at Mazda Motor Europe in Leverkusen – joining newly-appointed Chief Operating Officer, Philip Waring’s management team at the start of the new year.
Mazda has won the Design Challenge “Motor Sports 2025” at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, which opened earlier this week. Nine of southern California’s automobile design studios were asked to give their vision of how a sports car might look 17 years from now – in California’s zero-emissions society – and Mazda North American Operation (MNAO) design team’s concept car, Mazda KAAN, was chosen the winner.
Judges selected the Mazda concept for how well it integrates innovative technology into the design, and for its unique styling. It is an electric race car concept that uses a patented electronic tyre system to reach speeds of up to 400 km/h, while producing no harmful emissions. It is designed to drive on a race track resurfaced with a sub-level, electro-conductive polymer that powers electric cars. Its exterior design was inspired by electric fields and textures seen in nature, particularly those in a lightning bolt. It is uniquely designed around powerful electric wheels, while the cockpit acts as a capsule to safely house the driver.
This accolade is the latest of several prestigious awards won by Mazda Design during the last two years, including the 2008 Grand Prix du Design at the 23rd Festival Automobile International in Paris, the contest’s 2006 Most Beautiful Design Concept for Mazda Senku, and the Louis Vuitton Classic Concept Award 2007 for Mazda Ryuga.

Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase the world premiere of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan) 5-door hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show on December 3, 2008. The second generation Mazda3 5-door hatchback follows on the heels of the 4-door sedan version, currently on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The all-new Mazda3 5-door hatchback adopts the same characteristics as its sedan counterpart, offering sporty driving and a dynamic design, together with top class environmental and safety performance.
The new engine lineup has been tailored for European customers and now includes the newly developed 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, just launched in the Mazda6, in addition to the existing 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre gasoline engines and the 1.6-litre turbo diesel. The new 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine is a high-performance clean diesel powerplant with top class output, fuel economy and refinement. It will be offered in two variants, a high power version with a maximum output of 185 PS, and a standard power version with a maximum output of 150 PS. Both have outstanding clean emissions performance and comply with the Euro Stage5 regulations. Fuel economy and CO2 emissions are also greatly improved compared to the current 2.0-litre version.

Developed in line with Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom philosophy of engineering vehicles that are fun to drive, satisfying to own, and environmentally responsible, the all-new Mazda3 is one of the most anticipated product launches at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show. The popular Mazda3 – the company’s best-selling vehicle worldwide – arrives as a fully reengineered, completely redesigned, second-generation compact sedan providing:
- A richer looking, more dynamic exterior design
- Added driving enjoyment with improved performance in all areas
- Progressive environmental and safety features
- A higher level of standard and optional equipment
- A level of sophistication above that available from any other car in the segment
The new Mazda3 is perfectly positioned for the rapidly changing auto market. It offers a mix of quality, styling, power, dynamics and fit and finish that hits the bulls-eye for today’s customers. In typical Mazda fashion, Mazda3 will offer standard and optional equipment simply not found on other cars in this class – exactly what buyers looking for more value and less bulk want.

This 2010 edition stands on tall shoulders: the first-generation Mazda3 earned 90 major awards from expert critics and achieved a 1.8-million sales volume during its five years serving customers all over the world. One in three Mazdas sold is a Mazda3. Even at the end of its build life, the first-generation Mazda3 continued to earn accolades as a leading consumer magazine recently named this car as one of the most reliable compact sedans money can buy.
Mazda3 Program Manager Yoshiyuki Maeda established ambitious goals for Mazda’s most popular car line,
“We were determined to advance the Zoom-Zoom driving experience to new heights because that unique feeling lies at the very heart of Mazda. On the heels of the original Mazda3’s success, we aimed to again exceed the expectations of customers all over the world by a wide margin. This meant providing drivers with a sense of exhilaration whether they were in motion, seated in the Mazda3’s cockpit, or enjoying its appearance from outside.”
On what it takes to develop a true “world car,” Maeda added,
“The development process began with careful study and identification of what features and performance qualities would be needed. That initial phase ended with my conclusion that every driving characteristic was eligible for improvement to reach our Zoom-Zoom goals. Mazda engineering and R&D departments in Japan, Europe, and the US all contributed to the Mazda3’s renewal effort and the development of the company’s new world car.”
New MZR-CD 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel Engine
• Next-generation MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine that combines Zoom-Zoom power with low emissions and low consumption
• Offered in three power derivatives to meet the needs of a wide range of diesel customers in Europe (depending on market and grade):
- MZR-CD 2.2 High Power: produces 136 kW/185 PS at 3,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm, using only 5.6 litres (sedan and hatchback) and 5.7 litres (wagon) of fuel per 100 km (combined). Emits CO 2 of 149 g/km (sedan and hatchback) and 152 g/km (wagon)
- MZR-CD 2.2 Mid Power: produces 120 kW/163 PS at 3,500 rpm and 360 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm, using only 5.5 litres (sedan and hatchback) and 5.6 litres (wagon) of fuel per 100 km (combined). Emits CO 2 of 147 g/km (sedan and hatchback) and 149 g/km (wagon)

Mazda Motor Corporation announced today that it has introduced the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE (Rotary Engine) vehicle to Norway's public roads in collaboration with the Hydrogen Road of Norway (HyNor) project, which aims to establish a clean energy transport system based on hydrogen fuel.
On-road validation is prelude to delivery of 30 more vehicles that Mazda will lease to HyNor. This is the first time that a Mazda hydrogen rotary vehicle has been put into regular use on public roads outside of Japan. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE is another example of Mazda‟s „Sustainable Zoom-Zoom‟ strategy of developing technologies that have less of an impact on the environment, and still provide exhilarating driving enjoyment and safety. Mazda is the only carmaker in the world to mass produce the RENESIS rotary engine. Not only does its unique architecture make it better suited to combusting hydrogen than a piston engine, it is relatively easy to convert. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE is also dual-fuel and allows the driver to switch between petrol when need be, and hydrogen where available, making it an ideal vehicle for use now in those areas in Europe where a hydrogen infrastructure currently exists. During the validation process, the Mazda RX-8 Hydrogen RE will also be exhibited to potential customers interested in leasing a hydrogen vehicle at environmental and other events.
“Participation in the HyNor project marks our advancement to the next stage,” says Akihiro Kashiwagi, Mazda Program Manager in charge of hydrogen RE development. “We are pleased to be a part of the establishment of a society based on hydrogen energy in Norway. Mazda plans to use the wealth of data and experience that will result from this project for the further development of hydrogen vehicles.”
